In EHJ’s Sheep Issue (April/May 2013 i136) we did a Hardcore Field Test on Kryptek’s line of clothing. In that article we mentioned the many layers that Kryptek offers and some that were coming out in 2013. The Poseidon raingear that was referenced in the article is just what the doctor ordered when it comes to counting ounces. The original Koldo raingear (which is still available) is fully-featured and weighs in at 3.18 lbs. for the top and bottom combined. Kryptek shaved 1.66 lbs. off and came up with the Poseidon layer, weighing in at 1.52 lbs. By reducing pockets and zippers, the guys at Kryptek were able to come up with truly packable raingear, especially for those of us that don’t live in our raingear but need it for those intermittent rain showers and heavy winds. Don’t let the weight of the Poseidon fool you, though. Kryptek didn’t forego durability just to cut weight. The Poseidon will surely hold up in the harshest of conditions, which is why it earned its namesake from the Greek “god of the sea”. The Poseidon top has a ½ zip with a lined chin guard to eliminate painful chaffing that would otherwise occur. Form fitting sleeve cuffs, waterproof zippers, and welded seams keep you dry in the wettest conditions. In addition to the Poseidon, Kryptek also improved their Valhalla lightweight layer, making it even more durable than before while retaining its lightweight. Probably the most unique layer added for 2013 is the Borealis. Its Merino wool/Primaloft top combines two top layers for backcountry hunters. The Primaloft front wards off cold temperatures and wind, while the Merino wool sides, back and sleeves maintain breathability in this insulating garment while hiking with a pack on. The Borealis is a great layer for those that seldom remove their packs while hiking/stalking in elevations where temperatures change rapidly. Head on over to Kryptek.com and check out these, and many other layers that Kryptek offers. If you happen to be in Sportsman’s Warehouse, Cabela’s, Scheels All Sports, or Dick’s Sporting Goods, you will run into the Kryptek clothing. See it in person and pick out which layers are best for your hunting situation.
