Join bow hunter Dan Pickar as he fulfills a childhood dream, hunting elk in prime habitat at the peak of the September rut. Over a twelve-day grind, Dan soaks in the best elk hunting has to offer. He has a vision for the quality of trophy bull he’s pursuing and refuses to settle, but that doesn’t mean it’s easy. Finding success on an elk bow hunt takes patience, strategy and a depth of knowledge that comes from years of experience, and making plenty of mistakes along the way. After connecting with a dream bull, Dan’s heart drops, as he’s unsure if his arrow met its mark on this episode of Beyond the Grid by Eastmans’.

Dan is truly an amazing bow hunter, I so enjoyed Dan’s dream hunt in prime elk habitat. I’ve been blessed to hunt private property for the past 24 years in New Mexico. Every year I was fortunate to have many exciting encounters but the area I was hunting wasn’t known for a large numbers of mature bulls and I was limited to 1000 acres. A very good bull would score 300” and in 24 years only shot one bull over 300”. My attitude was I never wanted the hunt to end and I wasn’t going to shoot an immature bull. I’m approaching my 70th birthday and have been battling multiple myeloma cancer, though with the modern drug therapies now available I’ve managed to stay alive and have kept myself in reasonably decent shape. I’ve recently retired and want to go to prime elk habitat, I was thinking possibly the Hill Ranch in southern CO. Could you recommend a few locations that I could look into?
Thank You!
