General Areas Inhabited by Gray Wolves in Colorado – Update

Above is an updated map just published by Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) showing where collared wolves have been in the past month.

Notable Updates

  • A collared gray wolf reintroduced in December spent some time inside the boundaries of Rocky Mountain National Park (RMNP). RMNP is exclusive federally managed land, and management authority over gray wolves in RMNP resides with the National Park Service, working closely with CPW.
  • Nine of the 10 reintroduced wolves are still alive. CPW is working to confirm the number of pups in Colorado. The two wolves in Colorado before the reintroduction are still alive and in Colorado.
  • Wolves remain north of I-70 even though the watershed areas highlighted are slightly south of the I-70 highway line.
  • Colorado Parks and Wildlife, with technical support from federal partners and as provided for in the 10(j) experimental population rule issued by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS), have begun an operation to capture and relocate wolves from the depredating Copper Creek wolf pack.

For comparison, below is the map for the previous month.
