The killer winter of 2022-2023 almost wiped out the famous Wyoming Range mule deer herd. Only 4,000 deer survived the brutal conditions. Join Ike Eastman in 2025 to explore how this population is faring today. Migration is one key to the survival of this mule deer herd. There is hope. Actions we can take today including fence improvements, habitat restoration and more have been proven to make a difference to the survival of these deer and other wildlife. Ongoing migration research is setting the standard for mule deer conservation across the West.
In episode #69 of the Eastmans’ Journal Podcast, host Ike Eastman sits down with Dr. Kevin Monteith. Kevin and his research group are “focused on providing a scientific basis for management and conservation of ungulates.” Ike and Kevan debunk some misnomers on mule deer management and how hunting them doesn’t effect populations actually.

Good info. Reinvesting hunter dollars via license fees into Strategic Habitat improvements to locations (winter range areas with less effected / more protected zones/ areas) such as downwind / down hill crest areas with taller browse – mahogany, buck brush etc. coupled with adequately tall wood piles / breaks bolsters survival. Nature does it in some areas and Mulies survive using downwind storm break forrest adjacent to browse. Copy nature and where possible create enhanced winter deer survival areas. Maslow – food and shelter
Quit talking about this BS and start talking about the selling and loss of public lands! You guys made your success on these lands! Help to preserve them for my kids to hunt on!
