Horses & Winter: Too Much For Western Wildlife?

The letter below came through my email this morning. I’ll not divulge who wrote it …

  1. This is a good video. Magnesium carbonate works much better when mixed with volume 40 peroxide which cakes up nicely and doesn’t drip. Also, makes sure you clean the nasal cavity really well, this isn’t depicted on this video but, there a lot of flesh and cartilage that needs to be removed.

  2. from a person who does about 100-150 heads per year, I would never boil any skull. Boiling will lock in the grease and make the skull brittle and flakey. also in a short period of time your skull will yellow because there is a ton of grease left in the head. Deer and antelope in my shop take about 3 months to properly degrease the skull. Yes, when I first started doing my own heads I boiled before I knew better…

  3. What is the easiest way to get the brains out before you do this?

Use a screw driver or a wire before and break up the brain matter as best you can. When you boil it the pieces will fall out and look kind of like scrambled egg. Make sure you put some dish soap in the water if you do it this way.
